Menopause is a phase of aging for a woman and usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, although the timing can vary. It’s a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman's menstrual cycles and reproductive years.

What is Menopause?
- Menopause refers to the stopping of a woman’s period.
- Occurs around the age of 51 but can be earlier or later.
- Menopause is defined as happening when a woman has not had a period for 12 consecutive months.
- After this a woman is post-menopausal.
- There are 34 symptoms of menopause.
- Symptoms experienced in menopause tend to be more persistent as a woman’s hormone levels have significantly reduced

What is early Menopause?
- When menopause occurs under the age of 45 this is known as an early menopause
- Blood tests are needed to confirm early menopause and to exclude other causes such as Thyroid issues or Polycystic Ovary Disease.
What is Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)?
- When menopause occurs under the age of 40 it is usually referred to as Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)
- POI occurs when a woman’s ovaries stop working properly and they no longer produce normal amounts of hormone.
- This causes her periods to become either irregular or stop working altogether triggering menopausal symptoms.
- Causes of POI include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, certain types of surgery and autoimmune disease.
- Blood tests are often needed to diagnose POI.

Menopause that occurs at 40 or younger is considered premature menopause. When there’s no medical or surgical cause for premature menopause, it’s normally called Primary Ovarian Insufficiency
